  1. I think Columbus Day should be removed becasue he didnt really discover the Americas the Native Americanas (Asian Nomads). Plus other people possibly several yearss before that and maybe centuries before that other people disoverd the Americas.

    1. Columbus Day should be removed. Sure, Christopher Columbus "found" the Americas, but did he really? He only landed on an island in the Carribean. He met the natives as soon as he landed, and described them as "without religion", and said that they would "make excellent servants". he then proceeded to take them back to Spain. the original population of the island that Columbus found was about 250,000. 40 years later, only 500 remained. Disease and harsh treatment and malnourishment by the Spanish caused the death of 99.8% of the population! Columbus was cruel, there should not be a Columbus day

  2. I think Columbus Day should be removed as a holiday because he never even made it to America. He made it to San Salvatore in the Caribbean. He also killed all but 500 of the Indians that lived there. The Indians willingly helped Columbus's crew and in return they almost wiped out the population. The Vikings made it to the Americas long before the Europeans. Christopher Columbus should be considered the bad guy and should not be honored in any way.

    8. Though I agree with you, I wouldn't call Columbus a bad guy. You have to understand he was doing what he was taught to do! European Christianity had to do with God, Gold, and Glory. He was taught to take what others had, things he didn't have. He saw the natural resources, the wealth, and took it. Though, he did it in a very horrible way- Killing off 90% of the Native Americans, he did what he thought was right. -Byonce Tyus P. 12

    9. Should we celebrate men such as Alexander Graham Bell, Abraham Lincoln, Alexander Hamilton, Alexander the Great, Winston Churchill, or Andrew Jackson? All these men were not the first, failed, or in some cases were not even the best at what they did. Some of them were horrible human beings, killing tens of thousands of innocent people. We recognize them and celebrate them for the long standing results of their accomplishments. It doesn't excuse their bad behavior, but we choose as a society to remember the positive influences of these men. Columbus is another example of a man of his time, doing what was natural at the time, and being the first to create a long lasting result from his actions. That is what we celebrate.

  3. I think Columbus Day should be removed because he really wasn't the first person to make it to the Americas first. He was selfish and even killed many of the Indians there that tried to help him. He lied to people to get to the top and convince everyone that there was no one at the Americas before him. He lied and tricked everyone to become powerful, rich, and famous.

I think Columbus Day shouldn't be a holiday because he wasn't the person to actually dicover America. The Native Americans really discovered America. Christopher Columbus didn't even set foot on America. He just took credit for discovering america for the wealth, riches fame, and the land. He also took control of the Native Americans and made them there slaves. Which is known as the encomienda. In conclusion, i do not think we should have a Columbus Day.

  8. Columbus day should be removed as a United States hoilday. Christopher Columbus was the last person to discover America. Once he got their he basicly took over knowing the Native Americans were already there. Then Spain used encomienda to make the Native Americans the personal laborers in the gold mines. The Native Americans eventually died of exhaustion, and starvation because they couldn`t tend to their crops therefore they had no food. Christopher Columbus didnt care about anything but himself and power. He wanted fame and wealth. I believe he shouldnt have a day for himself.
I agree with Tina not only did he take the Native Americans homes against their will but he killed their population in the process.

  11. Christopher Columbus was and invader he did not make it to America and so that counts him as an invader to the other countries. So there should not be a day dedicated to him because he did not find America(s) first, he sailed the ocean blue in 1492, but he did not make it across the ocean blue in 1492.

  12. This is a difficult question to answer because many people do think we should have this holiday and some think we shouldn't. I think we shouldn't have this holiday, yes it is a way for us to get out of school for a day, but it is not helping us understand what Columbus actually did. He invaded land the he "colonized' to become rick, powerful, wealthy, ect. He got what he wanted though, so now almost all Americans today think that Columbus was the first to discover the "new world"

  16. I believe that Columbus Day should be removed. Considering that Christopher Columbus was an invader, it is one main reason he shouldn't be honored as a hero in the U.S. Forcing the Native Americas to basically work till they drop dead., isn't something we should be proud of. When the European citizens learned of this journey, as well as students today and in the past, they kept out the part of the devising things that took place back in 1492. Therefore, he shouldn't have his own holiday in the U.S.

  28. Columbus shouldn't have his own day. He was an invader, a killer, and a taker. He stripped the land of its natural resources, taking the Native Americans with him to be 'laborers'. Encomienda was a system, created when Native Americans where stolen from their land, by the Queen. They wanted free labor, which added more wealth, but- because of their religion- they couldn't use slavery. So, as result, the Europeans found a way around it. Columbus, being taught to take what others have, saw what the Natives had. Wealthy resources. Being the greedy man he was- He took it. He also used his advanced military technology to conquer the Natives. Columbus killed off 90% of Native Americans. He shouldn't be glorified for being a killer, invader, and stealer.

  30. I believe that Columbus Day should be a holiday. When the Native Americans arrived, they did not record them being there first, if they had any records. Christopher Columbus was representing his country by taking over the land and expanding Europe. As Europe was a heavily populated area at the time, they eventually found out that he found land to take over and thought he was a hero. The Printing Press did record Columbus arriving there first. Yes, what he did to the Indians was wrong. Yes, him ransacking the Indians was wrong. No one really knows who discovered first, but we must give credit to Columbus who recorded him finding America. In conclusion, Columbus Day should be a holiday in my opinion.

  32. I personally believe that Columbus Day should be removed as a holiday. Due to the fact that he didn't even discover America, why should we reserve a special day for him? We would never reward a greedy, invading, thief, right? So, why are we supposed to honor Columbus? He invaded the Native Americans land (or the Asian Nomads if you will), practically used up all of there natural resources, and captured them to be 'laborers'. Queen Isabella declared this use of laborers, also known as encomienda, around 1503. The desperate need of free working laborers appealed to Columbus. The outcome was just as appealing; money. The Native Americans were just the people to do it. However, 'laborers' is just a more amicable way of using the term 'slavery'. Which indeed, it genuinely was. Due to there religion and not wanting to be sinners of God, they found a loop hole; the term 'laborers'. Columbus realized what the Natives had. He was just so arrogant, he believed that he could dominate them. He used the advancements in technology to his advantage. Wiping out a good majority of these Natives, he continued to overrule them. Yes, Columbus was intelligent. Yes, he made history. No, he does not deserve his on special day.

  33. I believe that there shouldn't be a Columbus Day. Columbus was nothing more than a man blind with greed of the idea of gold and fame. He didn't even "discover" America, the Native Americans did, and before them, the Asian Nomads. Columbus even back stabs the Native Americas after they help his men, and then he slaughters them and make them into slaves, sorry, "laborers", afterwards. Columbus seems more like a mercenary than a great explorer, as all he wanted was money and fame, and killed those who were in the way.

  34. I think Columbus Day should be removed because Columbus never even reached the Americas. He made it to San Salvatore. Also, the Native Americas (Asian Nomads) made it to the Americas way before Columbus did. There is no reason why Columbus should have a special day reserved for him. That is like saying I have a special day just for me and I got credit for something I didn't even do- such as climb the Empire State Building or making a new product. It wouldn't be fair to you, would it? The only thing Columbus should get credit for is recording his journeys. But, even that, even though the Native Americans were the first to arrive at the Americas, they did not have the ability to record what they had found.
To me, Columbus is a "bad guy." That is because all he wanted was power. He wanted money, gold, and goods. Also, Spain used encomienda to make the Native Americans their laborers in gold mines around 1503. Some of them died of starvation. Some of them died of exhaustion. And, some of them died of both. That is not a way we would would like to live. At least for me it's not.Columbus just cared about himself and he wanted power.
The other reason why I think Columbus is a bad guy is because when he arrived at San Salvatore, he killed all but five-hundred of the Indians. Why? I'm not really sure. I think its because he realized that they were weak and he could easily take control over their land. He had the military technology to do that. The Indians didn't. There is no reason why he had to do that because the Indians were trying to help him. In my opinion, he should not receive his own day all to himself (October 14th). If he can get his own day dedicated to him, I want my own day dedicated just to me.

  35. Columbus was a invaders, but he was also a discoverer. To Europe Columbus "discovered" America because Europe didn't know about America. So they thought Columbus found America. The Americans saw Columbus as an invader because he just came with fancy, new technology and started to attack the Americans with the new technology. Since we live in America I am going with the Native Americans. Columbus is an invader! We shouldn't have Columbus day. We should have the real founder's day.
