"Terrorism" is what we call the violence of the weak, and we condemn it; "war" is what we call the violence of the strong, and we glorify it. - Sydney J. Harris (1986)
As discussed in class, history is a matter of perception and one's past influences how he/she views the present. What is your opinion after reading this quote? Is the author correct? Be sure to post your response. If you disagree with someone here be sure to support your opinion and be professional at all times. This is being recorded as a grade. Good luck. -Mr. C
My opinion is I agree with her. Because terrorism to me is pure stupidity, with simple people who have no respect towards themselves. The author is correct to me, because terrorism is weak. War is strong, with people fighting fairly. When terrorism is used by a government, I don't agree on that though. Because we are saying its bad, but then we use it? Terrorism is used to inflict terror and to intimidate an opponent, but war. War is used to fight back and show them we aren't intimidated nor scared.

ReplyDeleteI agree with the comment. Terrorism IS an act of the weak. Terrorism is an act of violence uncalled for because the people making the action are mean selfish, and don't care about other people's rights. Terrorism should not be acted, but acted upon.
Brandon Mallack; Yes it is selfish. And all of your statements are true, and I amn't saying I'm siding with them at all. But, they're believing so strongly upon defending there religion and country, it causes them to do crazy things.
ReplyDeletethis is michaela cordes
ReplyDeletei alsoagree with the comment. Terrorism IS an act of the weak. and the song is come together by the beatls
i agree with the author because terrorism is a act of the weak. Its weak becasue nobody knows its happening and cant stop it. War is a act of the brave because its planned and they are fighting for somthing not just to cause other people pain.

I feel the author is correct. I feel you are the weaker person if you have to threaten or kill someone because they don't have the same beliefs as you. I am having a difficult time anwsering this question. I do believe that you should fight for rights and independence but I do not believe we should fight for violence, nor glorify it.

War is defined as a state of open and declared armed hostile conflict between states or nations. It is usually a large scale action, fought with armies, rather than individuals.
ReplyDeleteTerrorism is a defined as the systematic use of terror as means of coercion, and terror is defined as a violent or destructive acts committed by groups of individuals, usually committed against a non-combatant civilian population in order to intimidate a population or government into granting their demands.
In conclusion, while both war and terrorism may have their goals the objective of bringing down a government, and while people will sometimes live in fear and perhaps die in either case, the parties involved and the methods used are what make the difference. It's the difference between dropping a bomb from a plane on a munitions factory that supports the enemies war making effort and detonating a bomb in the middle of a crowded street for no other purpose than to cause destruction among the non-combatant, civilian population
I disagree with the author of terroism. Terrorism does not mean that the terrists are weak. The terrists are very smart and strong about there belifes. But that dosnt mean there belifes are right about what they do to other countries like crashing planes into there trade centers. But I do agree war as being violence of the strong. -Dean Disanzo
ReplyDeleteI agree with the author by them saying terrorism s weak because the terrorists dont tell anyone what they are doing and are very secritive about it. Weak yes, stupid no terrorists are actually very smart maybe not in our eyes because they harm us but if you think about it terrorists think of all of these plans on attacking us and they work most of the time. Now for war, I think war is a very strong act of violence. In a war the soldiers fight for what they believe in unlike terrorism when they fight to please what people say.

Amanda Schavlay I totally agree with sydney Because it's the same as what Anthony Femiano said "terrorism is just plain stupidity." I mean to me terrorism is just like, stupid because we should'nt fight even if it's just because or if it's a really good reason to fight I don't care we should'nt fight. Are'nt we all like singing songs about world peace but most kids can't even make peace in school or even on the street so why can't we just come together and try to end wars and terrorism?
ReplyDeleteI agree with the author because using terrorism against people is weak because you have nothing left to do but indtimidate people using terror to control how people feel. However, when you are using war, you are being brave to fight for your country. -Helene

ReplyDeletei do agree on this statement because terrorists are the weak and either blow them selves up or blow other people up by killing them selves which is the violence of the weak as it says in the quote . While army soldiers in war have experience with guns and fight in wars to make them the violence of the strong
