Thanks giving is when the pilgrims sat down and ate together with the Indians after they hated each other for a long period of time showing they needed each other.
my granmother said that its when the Pilgrims and the Indians sat down for dinner. my neighbor said its when the European settlers come to America and celebrating the bounty of their new land. also he said it reconized their friendship with the Native Americans. I think its when a group of people sat down to eat and made friends with eachother.
Prior to reading this question, I did not know anything about the "real" history of Thanksgiving (I mean I know the history I was taught in school, but this question made me think it was not the truth). So, I Googled "the real history of Thanksgiving" and it got a lot of hits. Many of them ended in .com, so first I looked on Wikipedia which gave me some background. Then, I looked at websites that ended in .org (they are more trustworthy than .com). Then I looked at videos (one was made by the same author of one of the websites below that I found, so I wanted triangulation of sources). In the end, I found a book about lies the author was taught in history class (below too). In short, what I found is as follows. Native Americans celebrated an autumn harvest prior to the arrival of the European settlers. When they got here, an Indian named Squanto helped them learn how to work the land and survive in North America. Then, they had a celebration of their harvest (some say Squanto wasn't even invited to the party). In the end, the settlers and native Americans did not get along and the Europeans began taking the land from the native Americans and killing them... so sad. This is what I gathered from my research, so I don't know how true it is. I am interested to see what everybody else finds/says!
