Columbus Day Debate

This week's lessons have discussed the history of the voyages of Christopher Columbus.  From these lessons we  have learned about the different perspectives of the people who were affected by this period in history.  The question I ask you to respond to this week will require your knowledge of the time period and the ability to defend your answer.  Should we remove Columbus Day as a recognized holiday or should the day continue to be observed?

  1. i think we should not remove Columbus day. We should just rename it after all the Native Americans he killed and inslaved. We should name it Native American day or something like that.

  2. Hi :D

I think that we should rename the day to something such as "America day" or something along the lines of honoring the founding of our country.

  3. Great responses. I'm happy to see students from period 9/10 taking the initiative and answering first. Great job and keep up the good work.

  4. Dear Mr. Caravono,
I think that we should not be celebrating Columbus day anymore. In my oppinion, Columbus did not even discover America, so why should we Celebrate for him? He was actually quite the opposite of what everbody thinks. Everyone thinks he's a hero. but to be honest, he is a murder and a liar. He killed thousands of Native American's just within one year of coming to America. The Native Americans discovered America, so maybe we should have a Indian day.So that's my oppinion on why i think we shouldn't have a Columbus day anymore.

  5. I believe that Columbus day should be a holiday. Yes, he had done some horrible things to the "Indians", but it wasnt his fault. Columbus thought he was in India the whole time, so maybe he wouldnt have tortured them so badly if he had known. Although, there is a good chance that he could have hurt them either way because there he might have thought America had spices and gold, aswell. Columbus did also trick them a number of times with making beer and taking them refuge on his ship. But, also corrupting the minds of younger children wouldnt be so good, either. Its not just my decision, but everyone elses too. So, I do think that Columbus Day should still be a national holiday, just not as respectful as it used to be.

  6. In my opinion I think Columbus day should not be a holiday. What did he realy do because he didn't discover America the Native Americans did, over hundrerds of years ago. So why should we give him the cretit for it. The holiday is supposed to be for a hero, but he is no hero he is a murderer and a lier. He killed thousands of natives to have the land for him self. So that is what I think about Columbus day. It shouldn't be a holiday for someone who didn't do anyhing but lie and kill.

  7. Dear Mr.Caravano,
I believe that Christopher Columbus day should be removed. I think that instead of celebrating Columbus day, we should celebrate all of Northern American history. He was a liar and a overall greedy person. He killed thousands of Native Americans that didn't deserve to die. When you think about it we are truly celebrating the death of Native Americans.because what we they celebrate it for is when he "discovered" The Americas. When in reality people over 60,000 years ago found it before him. That is why Christopher Columbus day should be removed.

In my opinion Columbus day should not be removed for 1 its and extra day off of school. And also its not like he made up the holiday. It was created after his time. So Christopher Columbus had no control. That is my opinion on this topic.

  8. In my opinion i believe that Columbus day should not be a holiday. I believe that it should not because he did not do anything great. For example wiping out 85% of the native american on the east coast.85%! Another reason was because he didn't even find what he was funded for. For my last reason is that it isn't like he was a wealthy man he died in debt and wanted.

  9. In my opinion, I actually prefer if Columbus Day was no longer a holiday. Others may have thought he was a hero for what he did, but he and most people in Europe just brutally murdered or beaten the Native Americans as if they were nothing. Most people do not know the real truth and history behind 1943. Though the Native Americans believed Christopher Columbus and his crew to be some sort of God towards them, they did not know what was coming towards them after they had landed in the New World.
So, what's the whole point of basically giving Christopher Columbus the credit for 'discovering' the New World? If technically he really didn't, it was the Native Americans.

  10. I think we should not remove Columbus Day. Instead we should rename it to The Discovery Of America. Columbus Day is the day when Columbus discovered America, actually he wasn't the first person to discover America. The first to discover America were the Indians. So because of that I think we should not remove Columbus Day as a recognized holiday.

  11. Mr. Caravano,

Columbus Day is a holiday for a man who "discovered" America, right? Well not anymore, in my opinion he doesn't deserve a day in North America just in South American. Columbus didn't discover the America we live in just our south sister, so no I don't believe he deserves a day. Letting him have a day is like, giving Martin Luther King Jr. a day if he didn't write his speeches or truly believe what was written. Plus, Columbus didn't do anything but sail, the Indians were the ones who discovered America. Why does he get a day? He doesn't deserve a day, especially because of the people he hurt and killed. Well, that's my opinion.
